Plastics technology center AIMPLAS is coordinating a project to develop biocomposites recycling technologies for aeronautics components.

The project, which started in July 2020 will last 32 months, with a focus on recycling methods, including mechanical, thermal, chemical and biological recycling.

According to the project coordinators, aerospace companies have already explored the development of biocomposites that use natural fibers as reinforcement and resins from renewable sources. However, up till now, no efficient solutions have been found for end-of-life management when they become waste, due to the wide range of different types of parts and the fact that they are thermoset. This is more pronounced in the case of biocomposites, a new material, which, unlike conventional composites, does not contain carbon fibers with a high market value, AIMPLAS said.
