Keep Films, Photos and Records Longer

2018 is the European year of Cultural Heritage, designed to raise awareness of European history and strengthen the sense of European identity. Currently, more than 75 years of visual and sound memory, including films, photographs, posters and slides produced between 1895 and 1970 are at preservation risk. Manufactured with cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose nitrate (CN), these memories could disappear due to the natural instability of the materials.

The plastics technology center Aimplas from Spain, a non-profit research association, launched with this background the Nemosine project in early February. It is intended to be a way to protect visual and acoustic memories from the years 1895 to 1970 in order to preserve the memories of European cultural heritage.

Extend Preservation Period Nemosine aims to improve traditional storage solutions, such as cold preservation, by developing a novel packaging that will save energy and extend preservation period.

As part of the project, Aimplas will develop nanofibers and antifungal composites, and incorporate the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into foams at laboratory scale. It also supports industry partners in the development of packaging at pilot plant scale.

This ambitious project, which is being developed with other 16 European partners, including the Cultural Institute of the Region of Valencia, CulturArts, has a duration of 48 months and is funded by the European Union through the H2020 program.
